Statement from the Grupo de Puebla in regard of the recent decision from the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia

DECLARACION

The decision of the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia to give house arrest to former President and Senator Álvaro Uribe Vélez, in a judicial process in which his conduct is being investigated, shows the strength of the democratic institutions in Colombia, based on the separation of powers and the respect among them. Former President Uribe must receive during his defense, all the guarantees that are part of the due process as a part of the Rule of Law. It is a matter of public knowledge that the final decision on this process is deeply relevant on the origin and the relationship between paramilitarism and the Colombian armed conflict and its implications on the peace and safety of the hemisphere.
